Well, I'm among the least-qualified people to give advice on what works with a man, but I seem to be the only one here right at the moment. You know you want to talk to him, so why not give a call? If you have to pay for long distance by the minute, I think it might be wise to let him know up-front that you have to really watch your phone bill because you're trying to build your business (or whatever reason you want to give). If you pay a flat rate for unlimited long distance, then that wouldn't be a concern. So this isn't really advice about whether or not to call him, but rather just to be careful not to cause yourself any added financial pressures in the process.
All that said, I think it's kind of nice that he gave you his number. That way you can reach out and hear his voice without having to give him open access to your home. And this way, it's not you who's sitting by the phone, waiting anxiously for a call. Seems kind of a gentlemanly thing for him to have done, to let the choice be fully with you.
